All tubes from my now retired father Dynaco Dave who has come to the point where his collection of several thousand tubes need to move on to good new homes as he has aged out and will not be building/restoring any more tube amps These tubes were from his personal collection of over 50+ years. My dad ensures that most if not all may be considered as “old stock”, some may be “new old stock”, some are “used old stock”; but none are current production!
For clarity, “New” is unused.
Old Stock is out of current production.
Thus, “true NOS” is unused out-of-production. The previous owner attempted to keep NOS with its original box. It is reasonable to find a NOS tube without its original box.
NOS is a condition “unused out of production”.
A comment on test results: there is no such thing tests as NOS.
It either tests bad, good, a percentage or a numerical value based upon the tube tester.
Due to the volume of tubes, we have not included photos.
We will do my best to ensure your tube(s) arrive intact.
And your “review” comments should reflect such.
This an opportunity to try tube rolling inexpensively before you commit significant sums to acquire true vintage NOS tubes.
Testing Protocol:
All tube testers were provided a stable 120 +/- 0.2 VAC by a variac. All testers setup as per their manual instructs. Tube pin configuration determines which tube tester is used for testing. Testers used: Emission Tube Tester used: B&K model 747
Emissions Testers used have either been calibrated or verified to be on or close to their bogie tube value (+/- 1-2 points, percentage accuracy); and a percentage value is measured.
Transconductance or mutual conductance testers were calibrated to exact accuracy to reflect Mutual or transconductance testers measure a distinct value as per manufacturer.
Testing objectives:
1. Importantly, all tubes firstly on the emissions testers are tested for shorts, leakage, gas, and results vet tube as discarded (rejected) or accepted for further tests.
2. Tube measured value is given as a percentage or a numerical value.
If a percentage then an Emissions tester was used. If a numerical value, then a Transconductance tester was used.
A. Emissions:
All emissions test value as “bad”, “in-between “, and “good”. See tester manual for details. Although the good value starts about 65% +/- on these testers, I only consider a good value well within the good region about 80-85% considered saleable. Those tubes scoring above 90-95% + go on to conductance tests, if applicable. However, there have been exceptions made. I repeat a percentage value means testing stopped at the Emissions phase; whereas, a numerical value indicates the testing went to Conductance phase of testing.
B. Conductance
i) measured value(s), the conductance reading value is sorted firstly by:
a) above “recommended value”, per tester used, the Triplett was used unless noted; and
b) between rejection point, “RP” and “recommended value”;
c) below RP, rejection point, consider discarded as not for sale.
Additional grouping of tubes:
ii) Multi-sectional tubes:
Dual triodes are further sorted by section tubes are sorted for:
(a) balanced; and
(b) non-balanced.
In this case, balance indicates sections are within 10% of each other indicated with a “Y”; and unbalanced are greater than 10% no indication but should be in a section with a paragraph header saying so.
Other multi-sectional tubes require all sections to “pass” or be discarded. May be accompanied by notes.
3. Noise tests.
Unfortunately, currently not all tubes are not tested for “noise”. Many tube manufactories of military and special quality tubes test right at the factory. It is assumed that these,” NOS” tubes are already tested as part of their quality control as per their manufacturing agreement. I shall not retest them. However, if I have noise tested then I will indicate so and by what method, tester or circuit prior to shipping.
4. Concluding remarks.
There is no industry standard as manufacturers set their own parameters resulting in a plethora of tubes of a family with different sound qualities that we enjoy today. So, the defacto standard is the original manufacture of the tube; and requires a laboratory grade tester such as a RCA WT100A or such, that is able to duplicate the actual test parameters. Otherwise, the value obtained through testing are “relative” to the parameters of testing determined by the tester. With that in mind the well revered Triplett 3444 Tube Analyzer is known for its sub-laboratory accuracy; and is capable of duplicating the tube manufacturers parameters to ensure accuracy.
A comment on testing results comparisons
Testing measurements (test value obtained) between different testers will likely vary for a multitude of factors.
Tube Identification:
As stated earlier, as an amateur tube enthusiast I have attempted to identify tubes with the following:
Codes, preferably etched as the code is the definitive identifier against sources of Philips, RCA, GE or whatever is available. Whereas, labelled, are less reliable due to OEM labelling.
Description: the physical construction of the tube against other sources identified on internet that carry credibility.
We will try to note plate, halo nd other characteristics in the item description. This will be cross referenced to reliably internet sources such as those expensive audio resellers and other resellers. This is not 100% accurate 100% of the time; whereas we am not sure we will indicate in writing or a “?”or indicating unsure, or unknown. We will use the word “same” to mean that; but “similar” is not same but very close.
Shipping:
Shipping is available to anywhere within Canada @ $18.00 and goes out every Friday
Canada Postal Service to Canada. Tracking is a must and insurance highly recommended. Packages without insurance are at your own risk and carry no warranty or refunds.
Items will be well packed in a box with reasonable padding. Pictures of item and packing will be done prior to shipping.
Damage shipping packages should be either refused. Or report within hours of receipt as a damage claim may be necessary. Failure to do so, may inhibit a refund as this is depended upon the shipping company policies. Pictures will be necessary as part of any claim.
It is reasonable to expect the contents of an undamaged parcel to be in good order.
It is reasonable to expect the buyer report DOA or issues within 24 hours of receipt of parcel.
We provide no warrantee as items sold as is as you accept the item as it was pictured or described in the ad.
The tube was tested for defects: shorts, leakage, gas, noise (in an audio circuit for excessive hum, hiss and microphonics; unless noted otherwise or if not noted at all assume it was not tested.) and its conductance or transconductance was measured and presented as to its condition.
We provide assurance to the tube is free of the aforementioned defects.
Tube rolling is at your own risk:
Ensure that you equipment manufacturer recommends the tube you are installing as some designs do not allow for “tube rolling”. Even commercially sold products have anomalies as their circuits likely a derivatives of former circuits design around a specific tube parameter. Furthermore, all tubes are the “same” as only within manufacturer and variances within a designation are common as well variants and substitutes are not the same either. Remember similar is not the same.
Whereas the “sound preference” it produces in your circuit whether or not that the manufacture condones “tube-rolling” meets your individual liking, We cannot guarantee.
As for tubes and the buyer’s preferences for a particular sound. For obvious reasons, this could not be guaranteed as the seller’s product is a vacuum tube and they have distinctive sound quantities that could only be described as a personal preference to which we offer no guarantee.
