Goodyear welting (GYW) is the highest quality method of shoe construction, invented by Charles Goodyear Jr in 1869. It involves many, many steps by hand and hand-operated machinery in which the sole is stitched to the upper leather for the ultimate in quality, walking comfort, and ability to resole when eventually worn out. The typical method of gluing on rubber soles found on most mainstream shoes today is not remotely in the same league. If you want new GYW shoes of this quality today, look to Church's, Crockett and Jones, Alden or Allen Edmonds. When you see their prices you will understand what a deal vintage shoes are.
