The EPI Stat 450 combines a conventional 10-inch woofer with an electrostatic tweeter array to produce a speaker that delivers the detailed and transparent mids and highs of an electrostatic system combined with the powerful bass of a conventional dynamic speakers. Most audiophiles agree that properly designed electrostatic speakers deliver unsurpassed clarity but the downsize is that full-range electrostatic speakers are large, expensive, and usually demand a powerful amplifier. The advantages of electrostatic speakers have been recognized since the 1950s and many renowned and expensive speakers have been produced since then by Quad, Soundlab, Dayton Wright, KLH, Acoustat, and others. By using 6 smaller Janszen electrostatic drivers for frequencies above 1000hz, the Stat 450 is much less expensive and smaller than the full-range systems while preserving accuracy and detail in the critical midrange. The system is also quite sensitive and performs well with any good amplifier in the 30-50 watt range. Janzen electrostatic panels are durable and long lived. They were used in many speakers from KLH, RTR, ESS, and Janzen itself, and are available on the used market if needed. The heavy duty 10” woofer in its 3 cubic foot acoustic suspension enclosure handles the lower mid and bass frequencies handily. Flat electrostatic panels are quite directional and there is definitely a “sweet spot” for listening, but, with careful placement, the result is superior sound far beyond what one would expect given the modest price.
