This has the very nice large 27" hi-colour hi-depth display.
Currently this iMac has the GPU problem whereby the iMac starts up but then seems to freeze upon the white screen with the Apple logo on it. Usually there are vertical yellow lines on the screen. Sometimes this goes away for a bit, then returns. I was going to try the usual fix of baking the GPU unit to reset it.
I have not yet taken it apart nor tried anything like reheating or reballing the GPU as my thoughts would be that rather than keep the low powered 49xx series 512Mb GPU, that it would make sense to just replace the existing GPU with a more powerful version.
I intended to upgrade the CPU to the WX4150 or so, along with the logic board swap below.
I was also going to do a harddrive swapout to SSD, triple booting it to MacOS, Win10, openSUSE. iirc, I have the SSD adapter, OWC thermistor adapter, and the upgrade Wifi to a A1418 ME086LL/A 653-0014 card so that the iMac could run latest versions of MacOS (Ventura??). These parts would be included as $50 in the whole package.
I was also going to do the logic board upgrade, where the main logic board is swapped out for a more
powerful/faster unit, that being get the 2600 CPU model, then also swap the CPU for a 3770 with SSD to max this unit out. (I may have a 3570 type CPU if I can find it.)
We have logic board 820-2828-A from 2011 27"iMac A1312 with CPU, and we thought to install an Intel 3770S or 3770T or 3570T or 3570S CPU as an upgrade to effectively make this unit a iMac 27-Inch Mid-2011 - MC814LL/A - iMac12,2 - A1312 - 2429 like this:
https://everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-i5-3.1-27-inch-aluminum-mid-2011-thunderbolt-specs.html
I intended to do things like add more venting to the back aluminum case by widening the air vents and etc.
Despite this being interesting, I just have no time to continue with this, so these have sat for 2 years, so time
for someone else to continue - I've already done the work of finding the info and obtaining the logic board etc.
